अॅन्ड्रु बेकेट हा एक अत्यंत हुशार वकील असतो. तो एका मोठ्या कंपनीत लॉ कंपनीत नोकरी करीत असतो. केंदाल कनस्ट्र्कशन नावाच्या कंपनीची एक खूप मोठी केस तो जिंकून देतो. त्यामुळे केंदाल कंपनीकडून यांच्या फर्मला बरेच पैसे मिळतात. त्यामुळे खुश होऊन त्या कंपनीचा मुख्य मॅनेजिंग डायरेक्टर अॅन्ड्रुला त्यांच्या बोर्ड ऑफ डायरेक्टर मध्ये घेण्याचे ठरवतो. त्याला बोर्डात घेतल्या बद्दल एक पार्टी सुरु असते. त्या पार्टीमध्ये एका डायरेक्टरला दिसते की अॅन्ड्रुच्या डोक्यावर काही जखमा आहेत व या जखमा दुसर्या-तिसर्या काही नसून एड्सच्या आहेत. तेव्हाच कंपनीतील लोकांना कळते की अॅन्ड्रु हा समलिंग आहे व त्यामुळे त्याला एड्स झालेला आहे.
याच दरम्यान अॅन्ड्रुकडे एका मोठ्या कंपनीची केस असते. या केसची तारीख व अॅन्ड्रुची डॉक्टरांकडील अपॉईन्टमेंट यांची तारीख एकाच येते. त्यामुळे अॅन्ड्रु केसचे सगळे पेपर्स तयार करून त्याच्या सेक्रेटरीला ते पेपर्स एका ज्युनियर वकिलाला द्यायला सांगतो. पण अॅन्ड्रु जेव्हा डॉक्टरांकडे असतो तेव्हा त्याला कंपनीतून फोन येतो की सगळे केस पेपर्स गायब झाले आहेत आणि आता ते कोणालाच सापडत नाहीत.अॅन्ड्रुचा विश्वास असतो की, त्याला एड्स झालेला आहे व तो समलिंगी आहे हे समजल्यामुळे त्याला कंपनीतून काढून टाकण्यासाठी काहीतरी कारण हवे म्हणून हा घोळ करण्यात आलेला आहे. असाच प्रसंग पुन्हा एकदा घडतो.
त्यानंतर अॅन्ड्रुला त्याच्या हलगर्जी बद्दल कंपनीतून काढून टाकण्यात येते.
आजवर सगळे लोक त्याच्याशी चांगले वागत असतात, अचानक असे का झाले याचे कारण अॅन्ड्रुला माहिती असते. तो कंपनीविरुद्ध केस लढवण्याचे ठरवतो. पण त्याचा वकील म्हणून कोणीच तयार होत नाही. सगळ्यांना एड्स झालेल्या व्यक्तीशी संबध ठेवायचे नसतात. केंदाल कंपनीच्या विरुद्ध केस लढताना जो वकील त्याच्या विरुद्ध उभा ठाकतो तो "जो मिलर" एक खूप चांगला वकील आहे असे अॅन्ड्रुचे मत असते. त्यामुळे अॅन्ड्रु त्याला विनंती करतो की त्याने अॅन्ड्रुची केस लढवावी. पण जोचे मत देखील इतर लोकांसारखेच असते. पण तो थोडासा वेगळा असतो. तो डॉक्टरकडे जाऊन एड्स बद्दल माहिती गोळा करतो. पण तरीही केस लढवावी असे तो ठरवत नाही.
एकदा अॅन्ड्रु लायब्ररीत जाऊन एड्स ची माहिती गोळा करत असतो, ते बघून तेथील लोक त्याच्याकडे विचित्र नजरेने बघतात व त्याच्या पासून दूर जाऊन बसतात. नेमक्या त्याच वेळी जो तिथे येतो. अॅन्ड्रुने गोळा केलेली माहिती बघतो व त्याच्या लक्षात येते की अॅन्ड्रु हा आता स्वत: केस लढणार आहे. त्या क्षणी जो ठरवतो की आपण या माणसाची मदत करायला हवी. मग तो अॅन्ड्रुची केस लढवायला तयार होतो.
जो जसा जसा अॅन्ड्रुच्या सहवासात येतो तसा तसा तो अॅन्ड्रु मुळे खूप प्रभावित होतो. अॅन्ड्रुचा पार्टनर मिगेल अल्वारेज याच्याशी पण जो ची ओळख होते. अॅन्ड्रुच्या पाठीमागे मिगेलची काळजी घेता येईल अशी तजवीज करत असतो, हे देखील जो ला समजते. अॅन्ड्रुच्या घरच्यांशी त्याची ओळख होते. एकूण अॅन्ड्रु याला जरी एड्स झाला असला तरी हा माणूस म्हणून खूप उत्तम आहे याची जो ला खात्री पटते. तो एकदम मनापासून अॅन्ड्रुची केस लढतो. जो अॅन्ड्रुची केस जिंकतो का? एकूण जो ला काय अनुभव येतात ? अॅन्ड्रु कसा चैतन्यमान व्यक्ती असतो हे "फिलाडेल्फिया" बघितल्याशिवाय समजणे शक्य नाही.
सिनेमा अतिशय सुंदर आहे. टॉम हॅन्क्स ही भूमिका अक्षरशः जागला आहे. सुरवातीचा तब्येतीने चांगला असणारा अॅन्ड्रु व नंतर वजन कमी झालेला अॅन्ड्रु हा खरच टॉम हॅन्क्सने उत्तम उभारला आहे. त्यासाठी त्याने खरच त्याचे वजन कमी केले होते असे मी वाचले होते. लोक खरच झालेल्या रोगांमुळे एखाद्या चांगल्या व्यक्तीवर कसा अन्याय करतात हे या सिनेमात खूप सुंदर दाखविले आहे. त्याचबरोबर, सगळ्या प्रकारच्या माणसांना समाजाने सामावून घेतले पाहिजे असे अगदी प्रकर्षाने सांगणारा हा सिनेमा वाटला. सिनेमात तसे वाईट दृश्य खास नाहीत. पण सिनेमा तसा जड विषयाला धरून असल्याने खूप लहान मुलांना दाखवू नये असे माझे मत आहे. पण थोडी समंजस झालेल्या मुलांनी हा बघायला काही हरकत नाही.
Andrew Beckett is a very bright and skillful lawyer. He is a very hard
working man. He is working for a very famous Law firm. He wins a very
prestigious case for a company called Kendal Constructions. This earn a
lot of money for his company and the managing director of the law
firm promotes him to the board of directors. During the party to
celebrate his success and induction to the board of directors, one of
the directors notices some wounds on his Andrew's head. He
quickly figures out that they are due to AIDS, and all in the
company realize that Andrew is gay and is suffering with AIDS.
Andrew is working on another very important case during
this period. Unfortunately his doctor appointment and case hearing are
on the same date. Andrew carefully prepares the papers and hand over to
his secretory to pass them on to another lawyer of his firm to submit in
the court. and leaves for his doctor appointment. But while he was at
the doctor's place he receives a phone call telling him the papers are
missing and no one was bale to trace them later. Andrew is convinced
that this is plot to remove him form the company since his directors
have found out that he is gay and suffering with AIDS. Someone has
purposely done this to get a reason against him. Similar incidence
is repeated and he is removed for his company.
Everyone in the company has been really good with
him earlier. So Andrew is upset with this sudden change and decides file
a case against his company. No finding a lawyer who can take up his
case is challenging. Lawyers are not willing to take his case because he
is suffering with AIDS and also they have to fight a big law firm. Now
Andrew approached Joe Miller who was the opposing lawyer in the Kendal
case. Andrew knew Joe was a really nice person and a good lawyer too.
Joe denies this deal, but he approached a doctor and get more
information on AIDS. He is still undecided to commit to Andrew's case.
Once Andrew is in Library trying to get more
information about AIDS for the case. All the people around are keeping
distance form Andrew. Joe happens to go to the library and sees this.
He realizes that Andrew is planning to defend his case himself, and at
that point Joe decides to help him out.
As he start interacting with Andrew, he learn a lot about Andrew. He is impressed by his thoughts and personality. Miguel
Alvarez is Andrew's partner. One of the reasons Andrew wants to win
this case is to provide backup for his partner Miguel after Andrew's
death. Joe also gets to meet and interact with Andrew's family. They are
all very nice people and even though Andrew
is suffering with AIDS, Joe learn how well meaning and good nature
Andrew is. After that Joe really start putting his mind and soul in this
case,
Does
Andrew win the case ? What all he learns about life in this process ?
It is definitely worth watching the powerful person Andrew is. The movie
is really good and Tom Hanks is too good in the role of Andrew. His
initial days when is is reasonable healthy and later on really sick
person. looks like Tom Hanks has actually reduced his weight for this
movie. This movie also shows how people change after learning that
Andrew has AIDS. People do not think much even being unreasonable to a
long time friend since he is suffering now. The movie covers this
very sensitive topic with a lot of elegance. Though there are no scenes
really inappropriate for children, looking at the topic, very
small children should avoid this but good for growing sensible children.
