तर सीताबाईला घरी येऊन जाण्यासाठी प्रताप गावाकडे जातो, आणि मुंबईला परत येताना त्यांचा छोटासा अपघात होतो. याच अपघातात, सीताबाईच्या मेंदूला मार लागतो व त्यामुळे त्यांना छातीखालील कुठलाही भाग हलवता येत नाही. (Quadriplegia). प्रतापला याचा खूप मोठा धक्का बसतो. डॉक्टर सांगतात की हा आजार बरा होणार नाहीये. आता असेच आयुष्य काढावे लागणार. पण कर्मयोगी सीताबाईला हे कसे सांगणार असा प्रश्न प्रतापला पडतो. व तो तिला काहीहि न सांगण्याचा निर्णय घेतो. सीताबाईला सांगतो की हा आजार बरा होईल पण किती दिवस लागतील हे सांगता येत नाही. सीताबाईला देखील हे खरं वाटते. ६-७ महिने होऊन जातात, पण काहीच सुधारणा दिसत नाही, हे बघून मात्र सीताबाईला अंदाज येतो. ती म्हणून लागते, की अश्या अवस्थेत मला जगायचे नाही. त्यापेक्षा मरण पत्करेन. हे ऐकून सगळेजण चपापतात. पण तिचे बोलणे कोणी मनाला लावून घेत नाही.
प्रताप तर तिचे बोलणे उडवूनच लावतो. पण सीताबाई तिचा हेका सोडत नाही. ती म्हणते, चांगलं आयुष्य जगण्यासाठी धडपड करावी अशी जर संविधानाने सोय केली आहे, तर जेव्हा आयुष्य नीट जगता येत नसेल, तर सुखाने मरण्याची सोय का नसावी. मला हातपाय हलवता येत नाहीत, अश्या जगण्यापेक्षा, मरण कधीही चांगले. पण प्रताप तिला समजावून सांगण्याचा प्रयत्न करतो की चांगले, आणि वाईट यातील सीमा रेषा खूप धूसर असल्या कारणाने, तू म्हणत असली हे जरी खरे असले तरी, कायदा ते मान्य करणार नाही. हिच्या जवळील लोकांना आता तिच्या पांगळ असण्याची सवय होते, पण हिला खूप त्रास होत असतो. तिच्यावर माया असणाऱ्या लोकांनी तिचे केलेले तिला खूप त्रास देऊन जाते, कारण परिस्थितीत कधीच सुधारणा होणार नसते, त्यामुळे हे करण्यात काहीच अर्थ नाही असा हिचा दृष्टीकोन असतो.
त्यात एक दिवस, सीताबाईची काळजी घेणारी नर्स लवकर घरी जाते, वीणाला ऑफिसमध्ये बरेच काम असते व त्यात निखिलच्या शाळेसाठी काहीतरी विकत आणण्याची निकड असते. त्यामुळे वीणा,, निखीलला घेऊन बाजारात जाते आणि घरी सीताबाई एकटीच उरते. घराला कुलूप लावून सगळे बाहेर जातात. प्रताप त्यादिवशी नेमका लवकर घरी येतो दाराला कुलूप बघून त्याला भयंकर राग येतो. मुख्य म्हणजे आईला एकटे सोडून सगळे कसे निघून गेले याचा खुप संताप येतो. तो सीताबाईच्या खोलीत जातो आणि बघतो तर त्या हमसून रडत असतात, आणि खोलीत शीचा वास असतो, तो चादर काढून बघतो तर सगळे कपडे घाण झालेले असतात. तो रागारागात वीणाला फोन करतो, पण तितक्यात वीणा येते. तिच्यावर वाटेल ते ओरडतो. ती ही दुखावते, पण सगळे निमुटपणे सहन करते आणि सीताबाईला स्वच्छ करते. बाहेर येऊन प्रताप चांगलेच सुनावते. या प्रसंगानंतर मग प्रताप आणि वीणा यांच्यामधील संबध सीताबाईमुळे दुरावू लागतात. हे सगळे बघून प्रताप आईच्या म्हणण्यावर विचार करायला लागतो, आणि शेवटी कोर्टात दयामरण / Mercy Killing साठी केस मांडतो. या केस मध्ये प्रताप यशस्वी होतो का ? या केस वर लोकांच्या काय प्रतिक्रिया असतात ? सीताबाईला शेवटी सुखाने मरण मिळते का हे बघत "सुखांत" या सिनेमात.
सिनेमा वेगळ्या विषयावर आहे. इथे अमेरिकेत मी खूप म्हातारी लोक बघते आणि इथल्या पद्धतीप्रमाणे ती म्हातारी लोक एकटीच राहत असतात. मग त्यांचा शेवट कुठल्यातरी इस्पितळात होतो. हे सगळे बघून, खरच इच्छामरण असावे असे वाटते. पण इच्छामरण आणि आत्म्यहत्या यातच खूपच नाजूक रेषा आहे, ती रेषा कुठे काढायची हा प्रश्नच आहे. सिनेमात दाखवलेला हा उपाय बरोबर आहे का हा प्रश्न मात्र मनाला चाटून जातो. अतुल कुलकर्णी हा उत्तम कलाकार आहेच. त्यामुळे त्याच्या भूमिकेबद्दल बोलण्याची गरजच नाही. बाकी इतर लोकांनी देखील चांगले काम केले आहे. सिनेमा बघावा, पण तुम्ही जर अतिशय हळवे असाल, तर हा सिनेमा बघणे जरा कठीण आहे.

Pratap Sitabai Gunje is a famous lawyer. His mother Sitabai is enterprising lady and has been running a small business in the village. Pratap is married to Veena and has a son Nikhil. They are staying in Mumbai. Sitabai has really worked hard and brought up Pratap. Pratap's father has an affair when Pratap was about 8-10 years, and finally at one moment Sitabai breaks up with her husband to raise Pratap. She manages to get a job as cook in family. With their support she starts a home based business, and slowly involves several needy women, and supports them with jobs. Out of several children from the village Vishwas has become a Journalist and Shirish a doctor. Now with growing age, Sitabai spends some time with Pratap in Mumbai.
Once while returning from a function in the village with Pratap, they meet with an small accident. Sitabai is hit on head and suffers a neural condition in which she looses control of her body bellow neck (also known as Quadriplegia). She is able to talk and eat but not able to move her hands and legs. Pratap is shocked with this situation and Shirish tells him that this ailment is beyond any treatment and Sitabai may have to live with this. It was very difficult situation for Pratap to convey Sitabai that she will have to suffer on this fashion for rest of her life. So he decides to tell her that this will be cured, but not sure how many days or months it will take. She believes him, but as time passes, she realizes that this situation is not going to change. On her birthday after the grand celebration will all family and friends for village , she expresses her mind to all saying she is very happy right now, but she wants to die now. Everyone is shocked by this, but no one takes this seriously.
Sitabai is consistent with her request though. Initially Pratap just ignores this, but she always come to the topic. Her argument was if laws are there to help everyone live with dignity and pride, in case of people like her, it should have provision to choose death with dignity. For a active person like her, if she is not able to move a bit on her own, she will prefer to die. Pratap tries to convince her in every way possible. He also tries to tell her the law are to protect people and will never agree for this kind of ideas. Slowly everyone around Sitabai is accustomed to her life, but she is very upset with the whole situation. Most torturous thing for her was getting so many things done by all the near and dear ones. If situation is not going to change, it is better to die, is her thought always.
On one of the very busy day in office, the nurse who is hired to take care of Sitabai has some reason to go home early. Veena had some extra work and has to get some things for Nikhil's school, so they go shopping. Pratap reaches home before Veena and is surprised to see locked house. He opens the door and enters house and goes to see Sitabai. When he enters the room, he finds her crying and the room is full of foul smell. He is really upset by now, as he was about to call Veena, she enters house. He screams at her and she just keeps quiet and does the cleaning. After coming out of Sitabai's room, she gives it back to Pratap. She explains how she has been working hard with him and without any complaint. This causes some sour feelings between them. And at this moment he really starts thinking seriously about Sitabai's request for mercy death.
Pratap with all his knowledge puts up a case for mercy death for his mother. Does he succeed in his case ? What was the reactions of people around the family ? What was the reaction of public in general ? Can Sitabai get a her Mercy death sanctioned ?
The movie has handled a very different subject and I feel with a good success. We do see a lot of people around us who are suffering and some of them really wishing for a quick death. Suicide and mercy death has a very thin line between them in these kinds of situations. Is it so simple to take a decision on it ? Is there a real solution to this ? Atul Kulkarni and other actors have really put in lot of efforts in this movie and is has really come out well. Be careful to watch this movie, if you are very emotional.
